A few months ago, I was out walking around New York City when I got a text from my friend.
“Hey, my friend just had a $100 cell phone charger that he got for free on Amazon,” he wrote.
“It was pretty awesome.”
“Awesome” was the kind of sentiment that could get me all excited for a phone I don’t really have to pay for, but I wanted one anyway.
So, I got one, and it’s a beautiful, beautiful thing.
“I got a $200 iPhone X for Christmas,” he texted me.
“Great phone, but it doesn’t have a charger.
Can I just get a $30 one?”
I immediately looked at the price tag on the charger, and realized that this wasn’t an iPhone X that I was getting.
I thought, Oh, my god, that’s not a $50 iPhone X, it’s an iPhone 8.
“No, that was an iPhone 7.
I didn’t even know it was an $80 iPhone 7, I just knew that it was a $120 iPhone 7,” I wrote back.
“So, it looks like I should get an iPhone 9.”
And I did.
“Oh, it also has an SD card slot!” my friend replied.
So much for a $60 iPhone.
“A lot of these chargers are sold for $100.
I’ve seen these in store, but that doesn’t look like it’s the case with this one,” I replied.
“But what’s this?”
“It’s a $75 iPhone charger that you’ll need to get a USB-C cable from,” he replied.
That’s when things got weird.
I was like, I didn.
“This is an iPhone charger?”
“Yeah, and a $10 charger that’s also a $25 iPhone charger.”
“And this is a $40 charger that also has a USB cable?”
“Yes, it has a $20 charger with a USB C cable.”
“I’ve never seen one that had a USB A port on it?”
“Well, then why did you get one?”
“Because I had to.”
“That’s what I thought,” he said, a little sheepishly.
“Why am I buying this thing?”
“I’m trying to figure out what kind of charger to get,” I said, “and I’m not really sure yet.”
“How much do you think it’s going to cost?” he asked.
I asked him to estimate.
“Well it’s probably going to be like $200 to get it, so it’s more like $300,” I told him.
I had a little bit of an impulse buy.
But then I realized, “Oh no, this is really expensive.
I’ll have to make it my main phone.”
So, the next day, I called my buddy and explained that I had been browsing the internet and I didn
